Tim Swarens has been The Indianapolis Star’s opinion editor since 2003.
Swarens was the editor or writer on projects that in recent years have won awards from Sigma Delta Chi, National Headliners, Scripps Howard, American Society of Newspaper Editors, and Robert F. Kennedy Excellence in Journalism. He also is the 2016 recipient of the Eugene C. Pulliam Fellowship for Editorial Writing.
Swarens has played a leadership role at The Star on a wide variety of issues, including leading a nationally acclaimed project that explored educational and social challenges in a local high school, an effort that led to the creation of a communitywide initiative, “Our Children/Our City.”
Before joining The Star, he was an editor at The Miami Herald. His commentary has been published in the Wall Street Journal and USA Today. He has also appeared on CNN, Fox News, MSNBC and the BBC. Swarens recently completed a 16-month-long project on child trafficking called EXPLOITED. The 10-column series was published across the USA Today Network, reaching more than 5 million digital and print readers.
Swarens is a 1981 graduate of Vincennes University and a 1983 graduate of Indiana University.
